The controversial statements of Óscar de la Hoya that put Canelo Álvarez in check
The head of Golden Boy Promotions launches a fierce accusation against Canelo, accusing him of starting a “diva era” in boxing.
>”Last week, it was revealed that Canelo had agreed to fight Jake Paul, but at the last minute, he decided to back out and go for a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh,” De la Hoya said through his social media. “Jake Paul said that Canelo has no loyalty and that his Mexican fans aren’t his priority. And honestly, he couldn’t have said something more accurate.”
Óscar de la Hoya delved into the first of his two accusations against Canelo: his lack of loyalty in the world of boxing. According to him, the Mexican has been disloyal to everyone, whether it was to him, his former promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, or even his most recent partner, Al Haymon of Premier Boxing Champions.
“It hurt me when you left Golden Boy in 2015, but now you’ve done the same thing to Eddie Hearn and Al Haymon, who just a few months ago you called ‘the best promoter in history’. Loyalty means nothing to you. You’re in this business just for the money, not for the fans or for the Mexican people.
You’ve made it clear that none of them truly matter to you,” he stated. “You’ve never lifted a finger for the Mexican community, and you’ll do whatever it takes to avoid giving them the fights they really want to see.”
De la Hoya second criticism of Canelo points to his evasive stance against David Benavidez. Who has defeated notable opponents like Caleb Plant, Demetrius Andrade, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and more recently David Morrell.
>Benavidez presents the greatest challenge for Canelo, yet the Mexican has shown little interest in facing him. Sparking rumors that he’s avoiding the fight. “Get out of here, Canelo. You were the one who started the diva era in boxing.
Other fighters respect you, but you’re responsible for making this the weakest and most money-hungry boxing era in history,” Óscar de la Hoya declared.
